Since the success in the clinical application of nanomedicine depends both on an orientation of basic research towards clinical relevance and on the broad clinical application of the tools and methods arising from this research, a strong link between clinical medicine and nanosciences research is of utmost importance. To fill this gap, the European Society for Nanomedicine (ESNAM) was founded in April of 2007. It is a society of individuals and bodies across Europe that focuses on the clinical application of nanomedicine and its implications for individuals and society. Through this focus, it complements a number of already existing European platforms, initiatives, and framework-programmes that see their main task in linking researchers and industry.

The European Society of Nanomedicine aims to promote the research and the application of nanomedicine and its implication for humanity and for the environment, keeping always in view the welfare of individuals and society. ESNAM concentrates its efforts in facilitating the exchange between its members. It also represents the clinical nanomedical community to governmental and international boards as well as to associations and industry oriented networks.
